2024 Recap and 2025 Preview

2024 Recap

Our challenge to ourselves last year was to see if we could grow for ten families for 10-week Spring and Summer sessions. And while it wasn’t always easy, we managed to pull it off. It’s fun to look back at all of our harvest photos this year and see the comings and goings of each crop.

Some Highlights Our early season carrots were terrific. We planted more this fall so hopefully we are set for another season this year. Our kale crop was also a standout—very prolific—we need to distribute more and encourage folks to freeze for later - like now! Microgreens were popular and a nutritious treat.

Learning Moments Succession planting is key—this means planting things like green beans and snap peas every two weeks or so instead of all at once. It produces more even harvests and if one crop fails, the next one might a super-producer. We also grew too many tomatoes! Since we didn’t have enough interest in the fall session, lots of tomatoes rotted on the vine. in fact, we had nice tomatoes all the way until Thanksgiving! In fact, Matt and I have both concluded that Spring and Fall easiest times to grow. Weather and insects are more manageable.

2025 Aspirations We love to farm and we’d like to try again this year if we have enough interest. Since both Matt and I both have day jobs, we’d like to be able to bring on third farm hand to do daily chores (it might only amount to a couple hours a day) So, in order to afford that, we’ll need to expand to 20-25 shares. We also think getting a commitment for the entire season is critical so we know how much to grow at the beginning of the season and to get our additional farm hand the security of knowing they’ll have employment for the summer. (we’re hoping to find a student or retired worker to fill this role)

We need your feedback Please take a minute to fill out our questionnaire. This will help us determine if there is enough interest—and customers—to commit to the 2025 season. Thank you.
